Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
