The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
